ACCIONA Energía’s Aldoga Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project is an extension of the Aldoga Solar Farm project. The BESS project is located within the solar farm footprint, approximately 20km northwest of Gladstone, Queensland.
The project is designed to have a capacity of up to 500MW of generation and an additional 400MW of dispatchable power for 2 hours.
Incorporating a BESS facility within the Aldoga Solar Farm offers many benefits to the region and the network. The aim of developing the BESS is to efficiently store excess energy generated by the Aldoga Solar Farm.
Project Overview
The site for the Aldoga BESS has been strategically selected as it is directly adjacent to the existing Mt Larcom Power substation and close to the Powerlink overhead transmission line. This will enable an optimal and efficient interconnection point and minimise the need for additional transmission line cabling or towers. By locating the BESS in an area with existing similar infrastructure and limited vegetation, we minimise environmental impacts and preserve surrounding amenity.
With the BESS requiring a smaller footprint of approximately 4ha and no moving parts, the facility’s location has been carefully selected and designed to minimise environmental impacts and preserve surrounding amenities. The project was approved within the solar farm development, and is currently at the design stage, with construction proposed to commence in the third quarter of 2025.
The benefit of the Aldoga BESS is to receive and store electricity during periods of low energy demand or oversupply and export back to the grid during periods of high demand. For more information about how a BESS works, you can download our factsheet.
